PROVIDENCE, RI- “I love you to India mom,” said Marie McMillan as she read one of her daughter’s notes.

It’s the day before Easter. A time when McMillan and 9-year-old Ani Emdjian would be coloring eggs, making baskets, or playing silly games.

Emdjian was struck by a RIPTA bus while trying to cross the street. Her dad witnessed the whole thing.

McMillan said, “He held her and as he was holding her, her eyes- her spirit left her. He saw that happen.”

It’s been over a week and Ani has been laid to rest. Marie is now able to look at cards sent from her classmates.

Ani had lots of friends and was loyal. She befriended a special needs kid, although she was picked on for doing so.

“She would sit with him everyday and help him cross the street you know, keep him safe,” said McMillan.

She loved to draw, play piano, and had a colorful collection of stuffed animals. She was also quite the goofball.

Now McMillan and her family are holding onto nine years of precious memories, trying to figure out how to live without their bright, bubbly daughter who showed love to everyone.

“It was just a very beautiful bond that we had, just so relaxed and cool and happy; gonna miss all that.”
