PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Department of Children, Youth and Families announced Tuesday that the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Training School has stepped down from his position.

Kevin McKenna is being replaced on a temporary basis by the former Acting Superintendent of the Training School, Kevin Aucoin.

DCYF said in a statement that they are implementing an action plan for the Training School.

“DCYF is taking immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of staff and residents at the Training School,” said DCYF Director Piccola. “Our Juvenile Program Workers have a tough job and we need to ensure that they have the resources needed to do their work, and that our facilities and programming are up to the task of helping rehabilitate the youth in our care.”

A part of that action plan involves a Captain from the Rhode Island State Police on assignment for 90 days at the school to provide safety and security support.

The Department of Corrections is also dispatching a corrections expert for 60 to 90 days.

Per Governor Raimondo’s request, DCYF will conduct a 60-day review of the Training School to provide recommendations for fixing operations at the school and improving outcomes for juveniles.

The Executive Director position at the Training School will remain open until the completion of the 60-Day Review.
