The Rhode Island State Police Department arrests a man who allegedly is responsible for robbing a vehicle, driving recklessly and assaulting someone.

Police arrested Evan Newman, 19, of Exeter for robbery of a motor vehicle, driving recklessly, leaving the scene of an accident, willful trespass and simple assault.

Officials say on April 24 at 11:51 am they responded to an accident that involved one car where a vehicle left the roadway and drove into a tree line.

Police discovered before they arrived to the scene, a person was assaulted and had their vehicle stolen from them by Newman after having stopped to help out. The victim was not injured.

Newman left the scene and headed north on Route 102 in the Toyota Rav4. He rapidly drove past the scene of the accident in the stolen vehicle almost striking the Officers who were directing traffic.

Troopers were not able to catch up to Newman but later located the abandoned Toyota on Sheffield Hill Road.

Later on, Police responded to a hit and run accident at the intersection of New London Turnpike and Division Road involving the stolen Toyota.

Police found Newman in a garage off of Hog House Hill Road later on and arrested him.

He was arraigned on April 25 at the Hope Valley Barracks and taken to the ACI after not posting his $50,000 surety bail.

On April 27, his bail will be reviewed at the Fourth District Court in Wakefield.
