Fall River police chief, Governor Healey address recent street takeovers in state
BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Fall River’s police chief was in Boston to speak about the recent street takeovers in Massachusetts.
Chief Kelly Furtado dealt with a takeover earlier this month in Fall River.
Back on October 5, just after midnight, police say 200 people blocked the roadway at Davol and Central Streets.
People there were doing burnouts and donuts and setting off fireworks in the street.
It wasn’t as bad as a display we saw in Boston earlier this month, but is a trend Governor Maura Healey and Chief Furtado would like to see end.
Governor Healey announced $14 million in safety grants Thursday to help communities across Massachusetts combat street takeovers.
Governor Healey says state police worked to disrupt planned events in eastern and southeastern Mass. this past weekend.
Seven people were arrested.
Fall River police are also expanding patrols in what the chief called known problem areas.
Thursday’s press conference comes after President Donald Trump threatened to relocate the 2026 world cup set to be played in Mass., though the decision would be made by FIFA.
