FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — Fall River police said a woman was charged with assault and battery after an alleged shoplifting incident at a CVS on June 2.

29-year-old Shyann Lynn Dias was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, possession of a Class B substance, and possession of a Class E substance.

On June 2, officers responded to the CVS on William S. Canning Boulevard for a report of a shoplifting and assault incident.

When police arrived, Dias was being restrained by an off-duty officer.

Fall River police then took Dias into custody, who allegedly resisted arrest.

After searching her belongings, police allegedly found suspected narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and other items associated with drug use.

According to police, employees saw Dias conceal items inside her bag in the store.

When staff confronted her, she allegedly assaulted them.

Staff called for help, and an off-duty Fall River police officer intervened and restrained her.

During the incident, police said Dias allegedly punched and kicked staff members and the off-duty officer.

“The intervention by the off-duty officer was instrumental in deescalating a potentially dangerous situation and ensuring the safety of CVS employees who were under duress. The officer’s prompt response, despite not being on active duty, exemplifies a strong commitment to public safety and professional responsibility,” The Fall River Police Department said. “Their actions reflect the high standards expected of law enforcement personnel and underscore the importance of readiness and service in all circumstances.”
