HANOVER, Mass. (WLNE) – Inside St. Mary’s Church in Hanover, family and friends said goodbye to fallen Weymouth Sgt. Michael Chesna, a loving husband and father who served his country.

Outside, he was honored as a police Sergeant who protected his community, and as a fellow brother in blue. Officers, most of whom have never met Sgt. Chesna, honored him the best way they know how – by simply showing up.

"The brotherhood and sisterhood we have is amazing," says Swansea Police Officer Robert Wilson.

Motorcycle officers, honor guards, and a sea of officers in blue were there to salute Sgt. Michael Chesna one last time. Inside, mourners remembered their brother, son, husband, father, and co-worker.

"Mike, you are my hero and I am truly honored to have known you both personally and professionally. We love you and we will miss you."

Amongst the thousands of officers were several local departments’ honor guards who train monthly for special events, including, unfortunately, funerals.

“That’s the reality we face it’s something we deal with on a daily basis and there’s not any police officer who isn’t aware of the dangers of the job,” says Fall River Police Officer Jared Mooney.

They’ve attended funerals for officers across the country, including one for Yarmouth Sgt. Sean Gannon in April. And today, another one for another local brother in blue.
