PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Democrats have their candidate to face Republican Alex Asermely in the general election to fill Dominick Ruggerio’s seat in the State Senate.

Stefano Famiglietti won the District 4 senate primary, as unofficial results showed him beating out Democrats Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, Manuel Taveras, and Lenny Cioe.

According to the Board of Elections, Famiglietti received almost 69% of the vote.

The seat has been open since April, after Ruggerio died from a battle with cancer.

The general election is set for August 5.

Senate President Valarie Lawson, a Democrat, issued the following statement:

“Congratulations to Stefano Famiglietti on his primary victory, and thank you to all the candidates for their participation in the process. As a councilman with deep roots in the community, Stefano has a keen understanding of the needs of District 4, and he will carry forward the sincere commitment to service that Senate President Dominick Ruggerio exemplified. I encourage all District 4 residents to support his candidacy in next month’s general election, and I look forward to working together with Stefano in the Rhode Island Senate to make our state an even greater place to live and work.”
