Families celebrate Father’s Day at the beach

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — Sunday was a busy beach day, as families took advantage of the freedom to celebrate Father’s Day by the water.
“It’s nice to get out and enjoy the sun, enjoy the breeze, enjoy family,” said Nicole Kirk of Narragansett.
James Boudreau is celebrating his second Father’s Day as a dad.
“Spend the day at the beach, then go home boil some lobsters Rhode Island-style, traditional,” said the East Greenwich resident.
But some traditions are changing this year because of the pandemic.
“My grandparents, they’re not seeing everyone like they normally do,” Boudreau said. “So the tradition’s not really being kept. Normally we all get together. So we’ve been doing face time, phone calls.”
Some families are thankful they can all get together this year.
“I feel bad for the elderly folks that can’t see their loved ones face-to-face,” said Ken Gremza of Narragansett. “But I think it’s coming. There’s hope. I think that’s the most important thing.”
Keira Schaefer feels lucky that she gets to see her grandpa, and knows all 17 of his grandchildren can’t do that today.
But she says next to spending time with Dad or Grandpa, reaching out is the best way to make the day special.
“If you can’t see family members just try your best to call or text,” said Schaefer, of Saunderstown. “Because a simple hi can make someone’s day.”
