Families receive Thanksgiving turkeys from New Bedford Salvation Army

NEW BEDFORD – Dozens of needy families in New Bedford took home a traditional Thanksgiving feast today… a generous offering that almost didn't happen.
The organization didn't know if enough turkeys would come
in to fill all 300 holiday baskets given out today, so it was almost chicken dinner for those families this holiday.
Though they said, it wouldn't have mattered.
“It could be a duck….you know, it's food… and it helps,” said Lynn Anderson, who was picking up her Thanksgiving basket today.
“As long as it's not a skunk!” added Lorri Correia with a laugh. She was also waiting in line for her turkey.
The community stepped in to fight the turkey shortage this year, along with a 100 turkey donation from a local business today.
“Thanks to the stories and the support of the community,
there will be no chickens given out today!” said Major Gilbert Parkhurst of the Salvation Army in New Bedford.
Those picking up their thanksgiving baskets said it symbolizes much more than just a meal.
“People sit down at the table together and spend time
talking,” said Major Parkhurst.
“Family… it's all family. It's a foundation and it's
togetherness and you know what's going on. That's gone through my whole family
and now I'm still trying to keep it going,” said Correia.
The Salvation Army is already focusing on the next holiday –
collecting food, toys and clothing for Christmas.
