Family and Friends Hold Vigil for Missing Fishermen

HOPE VALLEY, R.I. (WLNE) — Two fishermen, John Ansay and Oscar Diaz, are still missing after their boat sank near Block Island.
The Coast Guard has suspended its search after nearly two days.
But family and friends held a vigil at First Baptist Church in Hope Valley on Wednesday night, and are praying the two men are still alive.
“What we all know now is what we’re hoping for is a miracle,” said Ansay’s cousin Brittni Ferguson. “We’re hoping that they’re wrong and that there is still a chance that they’re out there and they’ll come home to us.”
They believe a miracle already happened when a fellow fisherman rescued Tim Diaz, the third passenger in the capsized boat.
Now as they await word on their loved ones, even a gesture as small as lighting a candle or saying a prayer is welcome.
“It’s nice to know that the community’s still there and supporting our family,” said Ferguson. “And people still believe, and they’ll be there for us no matter what happens.”
“Even the smallest thing means so much to the family,” said relative Tracey Barber. “Don’t give up. We’re not giving up.”
Family members say the hope other good Samaritan fishermen will continue the search.
