Family of homicide victim speaks out

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Suspects in the capital city’s 11th homicide are still on the run after a shooting that happened the day after Christmas. Now the family of the victim, David Long, is speaking out.

Long’s mom said they had just spent Christmas together when she a got a call she never expected.

Ellen Paine keeps listening to an old voicemail from her son, she doesn’t want to forget the sound of his voice.

“We just spent Christmas together and it will be my last Christmas with my son,” says Paine.

David Long was shot and killed early Wednesday morning. It happened right outside his apartment building on Fountain Street.

“The alarm company was calling my home so I kept calling him and calling him and there was no answer but you know kids. And then a half hour later I got a phone call from one of his friends saying what happened,” she says.

Police say it was a targeted shooting and drugs are at the center of their investigation.

Paine says her son wasn’t the kind of guy to have enemies.

“He was a loving soul and just a good boy. I don’t know what to say about that,” says Paine.

Long leaves behind a 10 year old daughter.

“He was a very good father. He had shared custody but he would go pick her up at the drop of a dime or at anytime just to go spend some time with her even if it wasn’t his day or weekend,” says his mom.

He worked at Kev’z Barbershop in Pawtucket. His friends and coworkers are now helping to raise money for his funeral expenses. Something his mom says shows exactly the type of person David was.

“I loved him dearly, everybody loved him. And we all miss him,” says Paine.

Police still haven’t made any arrests. They are looking for 2 people.
