Family of Red Sox great Pedro Martinez among 113 dead in Dominican Republic nightclub roof collapse

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (WLNE) — Family members of Boston Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Pedro Martinez were inside a nightclub in the Dominican Republic when the roof collapsed and killed dozens.

Martinez posted about the collapse on social media:

Our hearts are with you, and we all are affected. I still have family members that are still in the (rubble), and we don’t know what happened to them, but we just want to be strong like we have always been. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time, so I just hope that everybody has the same courage.

At least 113 people have died and more than 150 other people have been hospitalized, according to the head of the country’s emergency operations center.

Officials confirm that well known merengue singer Ruby Perez, who was performing that night, was among the dead.

A local governor, Nelsy Cruz was killed in the collapse as well.

She is the sister of former Seattle Mariners pitcher Nelson Cruz.

Former major league baseball players Tony Blanco and World Series champion pitcher Octavio Dotel also died.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
