Federal investigation into deadly Block Island plane crash expected to begin Thursday

NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE) — The Block Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department said that one person died after a plane crash on Wednesday.

The Rhode Island Airport Corporation said the crash sent three people to the island’s medical center.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. and involved an aircraft with three people onboard.

The New Shoreham Fire and Police Departments, Rescue Squad, and RIAC Operations staff responded to the incident.

Rep. Seth Magaziner released the following statement on the crash:

My heart goes out to those impacted by today’s plane crash on Block Island, which has tragically claimed at least one life. 

I am in touch with local leaders and am deeply grateful to the first responders who rushed to the scene. My thoughts and prayers remain with those who are recovering in the hospital.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash and its investigator is expected to arrive on the scene late Thursday.

The organization said that their preliminary report on the crash will be available within 30 days, with the final report expected in 12-24 months.
