Fiery crash leaves driver injured and hundreds to lose power

PORTSMOUTH, RI (WLNE) – A fiery crash in Portsmouth caused hundreds to lose power and left one injured.

It happened around 5 p.m. Friday in the area of Route 24 south.

The 19-year-old driver lost control of her car, hit the guardrail and then hit a utility pole.

The car then proceeded to burst into flames after power lines came crashing down onto the car. 

The road was closed for two hours as crews cleaned up the fallen wires.

The woman was conscious when crews arrived on scene, according to police.

It’s unclear as to the extent of the driver’s injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

National Grid said the crash left 750 nearby residents without power for a few hours but power has been restored to the area as of 9 p.m. Friday.
