PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The city’s Finance Committee on Wednesday approved the creation of a new civilian job within the Providence Police Department.

Officials within the Finance Committee say the new position will be administrative, and will not have any law enforcement power.

The creation of the position comes after Mayor Jorge Elorza faced backlash when he appointed Providence’s Recreation Director, who had no background in law enforcement, to be a major in the department.

The major position will be reserved for a police officer, according to the Finance Committee.
