UPDATED: Fire burns through mill in Woonsocket
WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A massive fire burned for hours this morning through a mill on 20 Privilege Street in Woonsocket.
The fire was called in around midnight, and was reported as four-alarms.
Officials said there were no injuries, and no firefighters were hurt fighting the blaze.
Mutual aid from other cities and towns were called in to help battle the blaze.
The mill was posted for sale back in April for $2.7 million dollars, according to Coldwell Banker.
It’s over 200,00 square feet and sits on four acres of land.
According to officials, the mill has been vacant for years and had been a chemical plant previously.
Firefighters are currently monitoring the air quality for surrounding residents.
In a statement, Woonsocket City Council President John Ward told ABC 6:
“It is sad to see such a large structure lost to fire and I commend all of the firefighters who worked to contain the fire and protect the neighboring properties. I am relieved to see that there were no injuries.”
No word yet on the cause of the fire.
ABC 6 has reached out to the Rhode Island Department of Management for the impact of surrounding bodies of water.
A resident, Janet Lanctot, shared a photo of the water this morning.
