PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Firefighters continue to fight the remnants of a large fire that engulfed the ABC Supply Co. on Beverage Hill Avenue in Pawtucket.

The fire sparked around 2 p.m. and sent dark smoke into the sky, which could be seen miles away.

The fire required the Providence, East Providence, North Providence, Lincoln, and Central Falls Fire Departments to assist.

Firefighters on scene told ABC 6 News crews that the large amount of building materials in the building had melted into a hot shell, which continually re-hardens as firefighters hit it with water.

This cycle has caused the firefighters to expect that they’ll be at the site into the early morning Friday.

“The building is a large building that is full of composite building supplies, so it does generate a lot of heat,” Battalion Chief Dave Cairrao said. “The plastics, PVC, asphalt, rubber and stuff like that, that adds to the fire load and makes us less effective. There is a lot of product back there.”

Despite a large amount of smoke pluming around 8 p.m., firefighters said they believe they have the situation contained just to the area where the melted materials are.

No injuries have been reported from the fire.
