Firefighters extinguish dismantled submarine fire in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – Providence firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out in a dismantled submarine Tuesday morning.
The fire happened at the Allens Avenue scrap yard around 9:30 a.m. Heavy smoke was seen floating through the sky in the Providence area.
Providence Fire Chief Steve Capracotta said rubber around the submarine’s hull caught fire, releasing large amounts of smoke into the air.
Capracotta said the flames were extinguished within an hour. He commended the firefighters for their hard work and ‘hustle’.
One firefighter sustained a cut to this finger, but there were no additional injuries reported.
Capracotta said the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) was notified.
