Fireworks debris left around Pawtucket parks and fields forcing city to clean up
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE): Pawtucket is one of many cities where residents aren’t happy after parks and fields were left littered with debris from fireworks over the weekend.
A spokesperson said the Department of Public Works had 3 employees focused on cleaning up fireworks debris in various locations and one employee focused on street sweeping.
Ronald Grenier, a Pawtucket resident, goes to Dagget Field to walk his dog regularly. Grenier, like many residents, said this year has been worse than previous years.
“Everything being canceled, people were cooped up,” Grenier said. “Cabin fever.”
Grenier usually goes to McCoy Stadium to watch the fireworks. While he expected people to still set them off themselves over the weekend, he said his neighborhood should never look like this.
“I think it’s disgusting,” Grenier said. “Clean up after yourself. I take my dog here I let her run, it’s disgusting. I completely disagree with the mess.”
Dagget Field and Slater Park are popular spots for dog walkers, bikers, and young kids playing sports, which is why Grenier hopes this doesn’t continue after the fourth.
“It’s a family park,” Grenier said. “It’s always families who come here, so yes clean up your mess.”
A spokesperson for the city said:
“The Pawtucket Police Department has received an increased number of fireworks calls when compared to past years. These calls come from all throughout the city with a few focus areas such as Festival Pier. The Department will continue to proactively monitor all known problem areas throughout the city. We understand this is frustrating for our residents and their pets.”
