First Afghan evacuee family arrives in Rhode Island
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE)- When his flight touched down just after 8:00 tonight at TF Green, it marked a beginning and an end for AMin Faqiry and his family. An end to a very long journey from Afghanistan and a beginning to a new life here in the ocean state.
A life once in danger in Afghanistan…
“If I had not gotten out my life would’ve been in danger.”
Now revived in The Ocean State.
“I’m going to start a new life like a new born baby,” Faqiry said.
Amin Faqiry and his family are now on U.S. soil after fleeing Afghanistan, a country now under Taliban rule.
Faqiry serves as a top U.S combat interperator.
A job that jeopardized his safety in Afghanistan, which lead him to The United States.
“”If I had not gotten out my life would’ve been in danger. I’m a supporter of The United States mission in Afganistan, so it was important for me to get out and carry on my mission of helping my people in Afghanistan.”
One of the catalysts in getting Amin to Rhode Island, was Johnathan Dator.
When Amin’s home was confiscated taken over by The Taliban this summer, he contacted The No One Left Behind Organization to help with he and his family’s resettlement.
Through the organization he connected with Jonathan Dator, an associate director of Providence College’s Counseling Center.
Someone that Amin now considers family.
“Johnathan is like a blood brother, he’s family to me,” Faqiry said.
“There’s a lot to be excited about. I’ve waited a long time for this and I’ve had loss in my life and to see a life saved, it means everything, it really does,” Dator said.
Faqiry will now stay with a host family in Providence till he can find his own housing with for his wife, four kids and one on the way.
According to Dorcas International The Faqiry’s are the first of what’s expected to be many Afghan families resettling in Rhode Island.
Families that Amin plans to help as he begins his new life in Rhode Island.
“My life’s going to be like a new born baby. I want to learn more and be a person who can be a voice to others.”
