Five candidates on the ballot to replace former Senate President Ruggerio

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Ocean State is holding two elections Tuesday.

The first is the primary in the fourth district to fill the seat left vacant by the death of former Senate President Dominick Ruggerio.

The second could help Central Falls regain control of their schools.

In the senate primary, four Democratic candidates are vying for the seat:

  • Stefano Famiglietti
  • Marcia Ranglin-Vassell
  • Manuel Taveras
  • Lenny Cioe

Republican Alexander Asermely is also running for the seat.

The seat has been open since April, after Ruggerio died from a battle with cancer.

The general election is set for August 5.

In Central Falls, residents will vote on amending the city charter to create a school board.

This comes after mayor Maria Rivera announced her desire to see the return of local control of schools for the first time since 1991.

The board would consist of four elected members and five community-appointed members.

Polls will open at 7 a.m., and close at 8 p.m.
