Former Friar Emily Sisson returns to Providence to prep for Olympics
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Former Providence College Track and Field star Emily Sisson is just one week away from representing her alma matter and Team USA on the sports biggest stage.
Last month, Emily won the 10,000 meter run at The U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon.
Saturday, she returned to where she took her first steps toward her olympic run, the track at Providence College.
It’s the track that helped her become an All-American and 2-time NCAA champion.
She came back to train with the coach that helped her accomplish those feats, Ray Treacy.
Besides coming back to train with her college coach, she said it was the weather that brought her back to friartown.
“I’m actually doing the training here to get used to the humidity that’ll be in Japan for the next few weeks,” Sisson said.
While this is her first olympic competition she’s no stranger to competing on a world stage.
“I’ve qualified for world teams in the past but this is the first Olympics so it’s really an honor. Women’s distance running is amazing right now so I definitely don’t take this for granted.”
Though he won’t be in Tokyo, Treacy will be keeping a close eye on his former runner when he she lines up on the track in Japan.
“Oh I’ll be nervous, you know I’m going to be watching every step she takes to make sure she does the right things and not get herself into trouble with the amount of other great athletes out there. I’ll be much more relieved as the race progresses and she does what she’s supposed to do.”
