Former Johnston Police Chief dies
JOHSNTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Joseph Polisena, Jr. said that former Johnston Chief of Police Joseph Razza died Friday morning after “an illness.”
Razza joined the Johnston Police Department in 1998, and was sworn in as chief in 2020.
He also served the town as s Emergency Management Director and Medical Emergency Distribution Systems planner. and was the lead instructor in Rhode Island Motor Vehicle Code at the Rhode Island Municipal Training Academy.
“The Town of Johnston suffered an immense loss today with the passing of Chief Joseph Razza,” Polisena said. “Chief Razza was part of the foundation of our
community. His energy, determination and kindness reverberated throughout the department to his officers and to the residents of Johnston.”
Gov. Dan McKee ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff at all state facilities and buildings until sunset on the day of Razza’s interment.
“Our thoughts are with the entire Razza family and the people of Johnston,” McKee said.
He also asked Rhode Islanders to lower their flags as a sign of respect.
“Chief Razza’s resiliency, integrity, and self-motivation undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the Johnston Police Department,” Johnston Police Chief Mark Vieira said. “Chief Razza was not only my close friend, but my most valued mentor throughout my career. As a department we will carry forward his legacy of honor, compassion, and service.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
