PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A former Providence recreation director has been sentenced to serve nine years in prison for child molestation, according to Attorney General Peter Neronha.

Manuel Nunez, 44, of Cranston pleaded guilty last year to sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Shortly before his arrest, Nunez was appointed as the Director of the John Rollins Recreation Center on Prairie Avenue.

The 13-year-old girl attended a youth basketball program ran by Nunez, said Neronha.

The girl’s mother later contacted police to report that her daughter had been assaulted by Nunez.

A judge sentenced Nunez to 25 years, with nine to serve and 16 suspended.

He was also issued a no contact order with the victim and is required to register as a sex offender.
