PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The state of Rhode Island honored former governor and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo with her own gubernatorial portrait.

Raimondo was among those in attendance Thursday night for the unveiling ceremony. Current Gov. Dan McKee was also in attendance.

The painting, done by local artist Patricia Watwood, depicts Raimondo standing in front of blue skies, next to the ocean and in front of the nation and state’s flags.

When asked her feelings on the painting, Raimondo explained how the motifs of the portrait reflect what she hoped to do while in office.

“I did try to bring change to the State House, I tried to bring a new approach and new ideas and so the fresh air, having [the painting] be outside, its very bright, and of course the first woman — I hope it reflects the change that we tried to bring about, and the diversity and inclusivity that I tried to bring to my own team and to the judiciary,” Raimondo explained.

Following the ceremony at the State House, a reception was hosted at Citizens Bank Headquarters celebrating Rhode Island’s education and nonprofit leaders.
