Former US ambassador who lived in Little Compton dies at 101

LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Former United States Ambassador and Secretary of the Navy J. William “Bill” Middendorf, II died on Oct. 24 at the age of 101.
Sen. Jack Reed said that Middendorf lived in Little Compton for over 70 years, served as an engineering officer and navigator during World War II, an investment banker, and as treasurer of the Republican National Committee.
His ambassadorships were to the Netherlands, the Organization of American States, and the European Union.
