Four arrested after domestic violence call leads to alleged assault of Newport officers

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Four people were arrested Tuesday night in Newport after police responded to a call about a domestic violence incident at the Festival Field Housing Development.

Angel Cruz Martinez, 28, of Newport, was identified as the suspect in the incident, and was wanted on domestic simple assault, domestic disorderly conduct, vandalism and larceny charges.

Martinez was observed in the area shortly after officers’ arrival at approximately 9:12 p.m.

During their attempt to take Martinez into custody, Newport police said he resisted arrest and punched and pushed two officers.

Several bystanders then assaulted the officers, according to police, and additional officers arrived at the scene to assist in the altercation.

The two officers who were attacked were treated at Newport Hospital and released with minor injuries.

Martinez was charged with simple assault and resisting arrest on top of the existing charges.

Three other people were charged in the secondary altercation.

Jose Carreras, 39, of Newport, is charged with assault of a police officer, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Calvin Febles, 28, of Middletown, is charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty.

Jetsenia Luna Schmidt, 37, of Newport, is charged with disorderly conduct.

All four suspects were arraigned in Newport District Court Wednesday.
