Fourth defendant in UMass rape case pleads guilty

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) _  NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) _ The fourth defendant charged with raping a University of Massachusetts-Amherst student in her dorm room has pleaded guilty just as jury selection in his trial was about to start.

Caleb Womack had been charged with aggravated rape but on Monday pleaded guilty to reduced charges of indecent assault and battery, and rape.

The 20-year-old Womack, of Enfield, Connecticut, was sentenced to five years in jail and 10 years of probation. The four suspects, all teens at the time, were not UMass students but knew the woman and visited her in October 2012.

The woman said she drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with them, but didn’t consent to sex.

The other defendants all said the sex was consensual but were convicted and sent to prison. Womack denied having sex with the woman.
