Fox Point Hurricane Barrier repairs expected to cause delays starting June 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The City of Providence will continue repairs on road covers integral to the function of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier vehicle gates in the coming weeks, according to a statement from a representative of Mayor Brett Smiley.

The road covers hold brace footings under the street, and help hold the gates closed during a storm.

The existing covers will be removed and replaced, and other surrounding structures will be repaired as well.

The Department of Public Works work will start on South Water Street on June 2 and will continue through June 27.

South Water Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic during this time between Tockwotton Street and the I-195 East ramp.

Delays are expected and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
