Police have shot and killed one of the two escaped convicts from an upstate New York prison, Richard Matt, in MaloneNew York, Friday evening.

Officials are currently pursuing the other fugitive, David Sweat.

A thousand law enforcement officers have been searching for the pair after an elaborate escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison, three weeks ago.

Matt was found in a remote wooded area not far from a hunting cabin where that found the prisoners’ DNA. Governor Andrew Cuomo says Matt was located after a civilian complained of a gunshot fired at a camping trailer.

State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico says that agents told Matt to put up his hands and shot him when he didn’t comply. Matt had a shotgun but did not use it.

Police are using officers, dogs, and helicopters in the Malone area searching for Sweat.
