PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Department of Transportation closed the Gano Street exit Sunday night to begin construction on the northern half of the Washington Bridge.

There is a detour to avoid the Gano Street exit so drivers can expect some more traffic in the area during construction. RIDOT is asking westbound drivers who take this exit to go one exit further, to South Main Street, then loop back around using India Street.

The closure will allow crews to reinforce bridge structure, lay a new deck, and lay new pavement over the deck.

The ramp closure is part of a larger $22.3 million rehabilitation project and it will remain closed until the fall of 2019.
