Gas prices in the U.S. are dropping lower and lower. On Monday afternoon, Dale Martin, of Taunton, filled up his gas tank and couldn’t believe the price tag.
"Amazing, haven’t seen them this low in decades," says Martin.
He decided to stop at the Geko gas station after reading it was $1.69 a gallon, one of the lowest prices in Massachusetts right now, according to Gasbuddy.com. He says low prices create more freedom to travel.
"We tend to take a few more road trips on the weekends and what not, go down the Cape," Martin adds.
While Rhode Island’s gas prices may not be as low as other parts of the country, we’re told many gas stations are seeing the lowest prices they’ve seen in a while.
Other states are seeing even better prices. On Sunday night, Michigan drivers saw shockingly low prices, at .47 cents a gallon in the Houghton Lake area. One report says the reason for that extreme drop was stations competing and undercutting each other for the night.
But closer to home, the reason for falling prices linked to the drop in crude oil prices, triggered by an easing of sanctions allowing Iran to enter the market, China’s economic slowdown creating a surplus, as well as fewer people traveling this time of year.
