Gathering in Stonington included man in KKK robe, police called

STONINGTON, Conn. (WLNE) — Police in Stonington, Connecticut received multiple complaints about a roadside rally over the weekend.
A group of people along Coogan Boulevard near the Mystic Aquarium were holding up signs supporting former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
One of the individuals at the rally was wearing a KKK style robe.
Police said they monitored the rally for about an hour and it ended without any issues.
The NAACP of New London told ABC6 that the person wearing the hood came forward as a “self-described troll.”
The organization further called it “deeply offensive and harmful due to the historical and ongoing impact of the KKK’s legacy of racism, violence, and hatred,” adding that “dressing as the KKK trivializes this violent history and perpetuates the pain and trauma experienced by those affected by their actions.”
Republican State Representative Greg Howard posted a statement on the rally and said:
“The presence of a KKK garbed individual in Stonington is appalling. It doesn’t matter if this was truly a KKK member or a counter protester looking to paint Republicans in some way. Adults, in this hyper partisan world, have got to consider the impacts of decisions. Imagine being a young person of color and seeing this in your town and how scared you’d be. I, along with Republicans in CT condemn the actions and ideology of any hate group. I represent 25,000 people in the 43rd District; we have different ideologies, different candidates, different experiences, and different ideas; we have common ground in intolerance of this sort of hateful display.”
Stonington Republican Town Committee shared his post and said that they echoed his statements:
“Hate has no place in Stonington and we condemn this behavior. The Stonington Republican Town Committee was not involved, nor aware of this horrific display until after it had concluded.”
