General Treasurer Gina Raimondo has made it official: she will run for Governor in 2014.
Raimondo made the announcement in an email to supporters complete with a video message. The message included holiday tidings as well as her reasons for running for office. See her message here.
Raimondo said she will kick off the campaign in January.
She will face off in a Democratic primary against Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. Clay Pell, the grandon of the late Senator Claiborne is also speculated to be a candidate.
Taveras wasted no time taking a shot at Raimondo. He issued a response following her announcement calling for her to sign the “People's Pledge” and agree to not accept money from Super PACs. “If Treasurer Raimondo will join me, Rhode Island can set an example for keeping Wall Street and special interests from using Super PACs as a backdoor to buying their own state government,” said Taveras.
On the Republican side, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and businessman Ken Block are seeking the nomination.
