Giving Tuesday impacts the number of families Big Brothers Big Sisters RI can serve

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — It’s Giving Tuesday, a time when local nonprofits benefit from people looking to donate in the spirit of the holiday season.

Tina Santos, the director of marketing at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island said money raised from Giving Tuesday will directly impact how many young people they can serve in 2024.

“What that means is we are creating one to one mentorship relationships in the community and without those funds we can’t continue to support as many relationships as we currently are, which is more than 200 plus hundreds of young people who want mentors,” Santos explained.

Chris Mora, the director of philanthropy at BBBS said this holiday season, no donation is too small.

“I think we are extremely fortunate to have such a wide range of divers and all different types of donors and I think that’s what makes us special, is that we’re really made up of just regular folk looking to help out so our donations range from $10, $15 to a couple hundred,” said Mora.

Families involved with the nonprofit can also request help in the instance of an emergency.

“We also have opportunities for families to request assistance financially for emergency situations but also for enrichment opportunities for the young people and all of the funds raised helps to support that,” Santos continued.

According to Santos, the impact Big Brothers Big Sisters has on Rhode Island’s youth goes far beyond the money raised.

“We’ve had young people that have said this program has been life changing for them, but also mentors who have said the same. Also recently from parents saying that this program has been a lifeline to them, to the improvements that they’ve seen to their children along with just their families and the support we’ve been able to provide,” Santos concluded.

If you can’t donate money, you can donate your time, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island is in a great need of a male mentors.
