Glocester neighborhood rocked by slew of vehicle break-ins
GLOCESTER, R.I. (WLNE) — Glocester police reminded residents to lock their cars doors and bring valuables inside after a string of overnight vehicle break-ins.
The break-ins occurred in the Jackson Schoolhouse Road neighborhood on Monday, according to a social media post from police.
Zachary Lemay lives on Lake Drive in the Village of Chepachet in Glocester and said the neighborhood is tight knit.
“It’s a very good village. A lot of good people live here,” Lemay said. “It’s quiet over here, nothing like this usually happens.”
Lemay woke up to police outside of his home around 2:30 a.m. Monday, with officers alerting him that someone broke into his wife’s car and tried to steal it.
“It was right about 150 feet down the road,” Lemay said. “Just parked there running.”
Glocester police were able to intervene and retrieve the vehicle, but the suspects escaped.
Luckily for Lemay, everything was still inside of his wife’s car.
“There was cash in the vehicle, a good amount of priced things in there, but nothing is gone from the car at all,” Lemay said. “[Police] dogs found purses, backpacks, and my neighbor had her purse taken from her car. My truck door was wide open.”
“I guess they hit 40 houses is what I was told,” he added.
Lemay said he is fortunate police responded when they did and retrieved his car without a scratch.
“We’ve been leaving the keys in the car, doors unlocked,” Lemay said. “It’s sad to say, but you never think of stuff like that happening until it happens to you. But, like I said, I’m very grateful to the police.”
ABC 6 News reached out to police for more information on the break-in suspects and is waiting to hear back.
