PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A fundraising campaign for a Brown University freshman who died in the December 13 mass shooting has nearly met its goal total.

Family members of MukhammadAziz Umurzokov established the GoFundMe to help cover the costs of returning the student’s body to Uzbekistan to be laid to rest.

The campaign crossed the $500,000 mark with a goal of $550,000.

Umurzokov was studying at Brown with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon.

His family said that remaining funds will be donated to charity in Umurzokov’s name.
