Governor Lincoln Chafee has decided to support Clay Pell and vote for him in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary.

In a statement, Gov. Chafee cites Pell’s, “plan and personality as best suited to continue the positive growth in Rhode Island.”

“The economic indicators show that Rhode Island is enjoying its best start of a year since 1984. Clay Pell will continue this momentum by ensuring that people are working together; business and labor, federal and local partners, legislative and executive branches,” Governor Chafee said. “Clay Pell embodies the traditional Rhode Island Democratic progressive ideals and that is what this state needs for the next four years.”

Clay Pell released a statement this evening saying: “I appreciate the Governor’s support, and I look forward to earning the vote of all Rhode Islanders in tomorrow’s primary. As the progressive Democrat in the race, I have a real plan to put the Ocean State back on course by ensuring everyone has access to a world-class education, to create jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and to invest in our people again. That’s how we’ll make Rhode Island ready for tomorrow.”

Pell faces General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveres and Todd Giroux in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary.
