Gov. McKee to ceremonially sign bill preventing library censorship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– Gov. Dan McKee will sign the Freedom to Read Act into law on Tuesday alongside Speaker of the House Joe Shekarchi, Senate President Valarie Lawson and the bill’s sponsors in the House and Senate.
The signing is ceremonial, as it was officially signed into law by the governor on July 2.
This law prohibits the censorship of library materials, aiming to affirm free expression and speech for authors, publishers and readers.
Eight other states have passed similar protections to reading materials into law.
The bill will be signed at the Rochambeau Library in Providence at 1 p.m.
