Gov. Raimondo Paints Dire Picture of Rhode Island Economy

They may have been applauding Governor Raimondo’s presentation, but they certainly weren’t clapping about the content.
In advance of her budget address, the governor told the crowd, the state’s economic engine is on empty; unemployment remains among the worst in the nation; and, education spending lags badly.

Most of of the state’s efforts have focused on the huge Quonset Business Park, but many cities and towns like West Warwick, and others want their parks promoted, too.
“We need jobs here in Rhode Island so anything we can do to make it easier for companies come here, build here and create jobs the better for all of us,” said State Rep. Patricia Morgan, (R) West Warwick-Coventry.
The Governor promised she’d look into it.
“We need to be actively out there helping these businesses. If everyone of them adds a couple of jobs, we’ll be in good shape,” said Gov. Raimondo.
Full details of the Governor’s plan are still weeks away, but here’s one clue:
“I would really like to avoid that. I would really like to avoid tax increases,” Governor Raimondo said.
The Governor’s full budget will be unveiled March 12th.
