Governor orders security review for National Guard centers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Gina Raimondo says she has asked for a review of the safety and security procedures at Rhode Island National Guard centers.        

A gunman killed four U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last Thursday.        

Raimondo, a Democrat, said Tuesday the security review will include considering whether to arm guardsmen.

Raimondo says the state needs to keep service members safe so she's going to work with the National Guard to see if changes are warranted.          Raimondo recently appointed Col. Christopher P. Callahan as the next adjutant general of the National Guard.  She says ensuring the facilities' security is a top priority for Callahan. He is overseeing the review.        

Governors in several other states have authorized arming guardsmen or increasing security at their facilities.
