PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Gina Raimondo has asked the General Assembly to amend her budget proposal to include reforms to the Medicaid system designed to save the state $91 million.

A working group formed by Raimondo identified the savings. The $91 million cut in the 2016 fiscal year represents 9 percent of the state funding for the program.

Cuts to hospitals and nursing homes account for about a third of the savings.

Raimondo submitted the Reinventing Medicaid Act of 2015 on Thursday to provide the statutory authority for the proposed reforms.

The initiatives are intended to help move the system to one that pays for services based on quality and efficiency, rather than volume.

Raimondo says it’s a comprehensive approach to offering better care, value and more predictability.
