Providence, R.I.- Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has signed into law a bill to help bakers buy wine in bulk for use in making wine biscuits.   A spokeswoman says the Democratic governor signed the legislation into law on Monday.

Wine biscuits are commonly sold by Rhode Island’s Italian-American bakeries.

The legislation creates a special wine biscuit license letting bakers buy up to 2,000 gallons of wine a year from wholesalers. It’s been proposed for years by baker and North Providence Town Councilwoman Kristen Catanzaro.

Supporters of the bill said it was a way to update Rhode Island liquor laws that they characterized as antiquated.
