Greenville man arrested for DUI in Smithfield twice in single day

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — The Smithfield Police Department said that a Greenville man was arrested for driving under the influence twice on Wednesday.
Thomas Garbecki, a 46-year-old, was charged with two counts of DUI, two counts of refusal to submit to a chemical test, two counts of driving with a suspended license, and one count each of accident resulting in personal injury, leaving the scene of an accident, and collision with an unattended vehicle.
The department said that officers were dispatched to Putnam Pike around 4 p.m. after receiving reports of an accident.
When they arrived, they found a woman who told them that she had a verbal exchange with the male driver of the other car, Garbecki, and that he fled before police arrived.
Garbecki was then allegedly found at his residence with the car involved with the collision.
He was taken into custody, charged, and released with a summons to appear in court on Oct. 17.
Police then responded to Steere road around 7 p.m. for a report of a vehicle driving erratically and striking a parked car.
Officers allege that the driver of this vehicle was also Garbecki, who was again taken into custody.
He was then arraigned, released on $2,000 personal recognizance, and transported to Fatima Hospital for alcohol detox.
