Ground cinnamon products recalled due to elevated lead levels

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A group of ground cinnamon products were recalled on Wednesday due to elevated levels of lead.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) said the products were sold under the brand names: La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad, Supreme Tradition, and El Chilar.

Officials said the products were sold at retailers nationwide, including Save A Lots, Dollar Trees and Family Dollars.

RIDOH advised consumers to not eat, sell, or serve these products, saying prolonged exposure to them may be unsafe.

The recall comes after the FDA initiated a targeted survey of ground cinnamon from discount retail stores following the October 2023 recall of cinnamon apple puree.

Officials said long-term exposure (months to years) to elevated levels of lead in the diet could contribute to adverse health effects.

RIDOH added that anyone concerned about symptoms of lead toxicity should contact a healthcare professional.

More information about the impacted products can be found from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
