FALL RIVER, MA (WLNE) – State and local officials got together Tuesday to break ground on a new Vietnam Memorial Wall.

Hundreds of Vietnam veterans and their families gathered at Bicentennial Park to honor the close to 60,000 soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice during that war.

The memorial will be 80% the size of the original memorial down in Washington D.C..

Local leaders are hoping this monument will inspire others.

Massacusetts Governor Charlie Baker apologized to the Vietnam veterans about the way they were treated when they returned home.

The memorial is expected to be finished by next year.
