Group launches support line for victims of clergy abuse

A victim advocacy group in Providence is offering a resource for victims of clergy abuse by launching a support line, weeks after the Diocese of Providence released its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors.
The new support line was launched by the victim advocacy group Day One. It’s a way for victims to reach out for counseling, and to receive advice about what steps they can pursue legally.
“People are so confused about what their options are. And we’re getting an increase in the kinds of calls related to these situations,” said Peg Langhammer, executive director of Day One. “They want to know what are my options criminally, what can I do in terms of civil remedies, maybe I just want counseling right now.”
The support line comes just two days after the Diocese handed over 70 years worth of documents to the Attorney General’s office.
Since the church released the report, calls to Day One have spiked, which is why the group decided to have a dedicated hotline with workers who know a lot about these types of situations.
“A lot of people felt like they were alone. A lot of people were ashamed,” Langhammer said. “Suddenly they see a list, including the priest that abused them.”
Calls are becoming so prevalent, that Day One received eight alone on Tuesday regarding clergy abuse.
The hotline is also catered to anyone who experienced abuse related to any institution.
That number is 401-421-4100 ext. 444. Day One can also be reached at Support@dayoneri.org.
