Guatemalan man living in Fall River arrested by ICE, indicted in court

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A Guatemalan man living in Fall River has been indicted for allegedly reentering the country illegally after deportation, according to the Department of Justice.

52-year-old Manuel Ruiz Luis was charged with one count of unlawful reentry.

On March 31, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Ruiz Luis.

According to the DOJ, Ruiz Luis was first deported in April 1996, had allegedly reentered the country at some point, then deported for a second time on March 28, 2012. The DOJ alleges Ruiz Luis reentered the U.S. illegally after the second deportation.

The DOJ added that Ruiz Luis had multiple criminal convictions prior to his 2012 removal, including one charge of operating under the influence and four separate charges of operating a motor vehicle without a license.

If found guilty, the defendant could be sentenced of up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine up to $250,000. Additionally, the DOJ said “the defendant is subject to deportation upon completion of any sentence imposed.”
