Guatemalan national sentenced for resisting officers during arrest
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Guatemalan national who resisted arrest by federal law enforcement officers was sentenced Wednesday, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Cristian Aroldo Pineda Diaz was sentenced to time served.
According to Bloom, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other agents attempted to take Pineda Diaz into custody on an immigration arrest warrant on July 15.
As police attempted to arrest the defendant, Bloom said he “refused verbal commands, attempted to flee, collided with a federal agent, and resisted efforts to gain control of his limbs.”
Bloom also said the agent was “seriously injured.”
He was charged with assault, resisting, and impeding a federal law enforcement officer in performance of official duties.
On Nov. 10, Pineda Diaz pled guilty to resisting a lawful arrest by federal officers.
Diaz was previously arrested in 2023 on charges of felony domestic assault charges and violation of a protective order, and had been in the country since 2006.
