PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Elliot Britto, 31, who was involved in a nearly three-hour long armed standoff with police, was arraigned by Providence Police on Thursday.

Officials say the initial call came in on Wednesday around 3 p.m. for an armed man, alone inside an apartment at 61 Ledge Street. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place and get away from the scene, one officer telling bystanders “you could die if you go down this road.”

Police say Britto has a criminal history of breaking and entering, drug charges, and was currently on probation at the time of Wednesday’s standoff.

Multiple police cruisers, K9 units, firetrucks and ambulances blocked off the area of Charles and Nahant Street.

Police seized a rifle along with other ‘weapons’ but did not specify what else.

Britto was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation.

No one was hurt during the incident.

According to the 6th Division Court, Britto is being charged with: 2 counts Felony Assault by Use of Device Similar in Appearance to a Firearm, 2 counts of Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence, 3 counts of Possession of Firearm Prohibited, Weapons Other Than Firearms Prohibited, and Domestic Violence – Assault and Battery.
